What you can do

Get out and walk!

- The benefits of walking are huge: exercise, lower petrol costs, protecting the environment. And the fewer car journeys we make, the less traffic there will be on the roads and the safer our roads will become.

Campaign for better streets for pedestrians

- We're looking for more people to join us . Anyone can get involved.  If you can spare just a couple of hours a month that could make a big difference. We're particularly looking for people who can help with

Responding to consultations
Organising events
Updating and maintaining our website
Improving our Facebook and Twitter presence

- We're also looking for people outside of Norwich to help with Living Streets campaigns around the county.

Motorists

Please don’t park on the pavement
– Parking on pavements obstructs them for pedestrians. This is a particular problem for people in wheelchairs, people who are visually impaired (and their guide dogs) and parents walking with pushchairs and young children if they are forced out into the road.

– Pavements are not designed to take the weight of cars. Over time, parking on pavements will make them crack or sink. This makes the surface uneven and it a particular problem for wheelchair users or the visually impaired.

Please keep all four wheels on the road.

Please don’t park on grass verges
- Parking on grass verges turns them into mud and makes the street look unattractive. It could also kill any nearby trees as the weight of cars can damage and tree roots underneath the verge.

Please stick to the speed limits
- Speeding traffic is not only dangerous for pedestrians, but can also be intimidating to pedestrians and can discourage people from walking.

- Crossing a road through speeding traffic can be difficult and dangerous for pedestrians.

Park on your drive, not in the street.

- If you’ve got a drive at your house, please use it. The fewer cars are parked on the street, the few potential parking problems there will be.
- If you don’t have a drive, but you have room in your front garden to build one, then consider doing so.

In your street, keep pavements clear

- Please ensure that any hedges or trees in your front garden are cut back to the boundary of your property so that they don’t block pavements and force pedestrians out into the road.

- Don’t allow any rubbish from your property or your bins to block the pavement

Businesses / Community Organisations

Provide incentives for customers / staff to travel to your premises on foot.

- Consider offering incentives to customers who arrive on foot or by bike e.g. a free cup of tea (e.g. Highball Climbing)

- Provide incentives for staff to NOT drive to work. There are some companies who even pay their staff if they choose not to have a parking space. Staff who walk or cycle to work rather than drive will probably be fitter and healthier, having less time off sick and therefore be more productive.

- If you have roads on your premises that are accessed by customers (e.g. a campsite, a supermarket) implement traffic calming measure to keep the roads safe for pedestrians.

- Please don’t park your commercial vehicles on any pavements or grass verges.
